One of the things to know about Yemen is that the Bedouin tribes of the greatest pride claim their origins there. We think of it (correctly) as a very poor and drug-ridden slum of a country, filled with very poor people who grow qat to chew so heavily that they forget to grow enough food; but it was not always thus. The Saudis made it that as a side effect of their own rise to regional prominence.
