Black Mountain, NC

What's interesting to see/do around there? The Biltmore doesn't sound like my cup of tea. I gather there are a number of scenic areas nearby. My wife has a conference at Ridgecrest.

  1. When will you be there? We are approaching the beautiful time for foliage; whether you should go north or south on the Blue Ridge Parkway depends on the date.

There’s a good live music venue in Black Mountain, more in nearby Asheville. Good restaurants, if you want to let me know what kind of food you like best.

  2. Her conference is over the 4th and 5th. We have to watch the carbs (A1C), and my wife isn't fond of things that are too spicy, but are both happy to try new foods. We'd be happy to hear any suggestions.

  3. Ok. That early you will want to go south, because the altitude is greater in that direction. Take I-40 towards Asheville, following the signs at 240 to the Parkway, then turn towards the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. After about 20 miles you’ll come to Mt. Pisgah, and between there and the Waynesville exit on US 23/74 you’ll have tremendous views.

In Waynesville there’s a great pub called The Scotsman. It’s got a fun downtown, even more so than Black Mountain.

My favorite restaurant in Asheville is the Mellow Mushroom, which offers gluten free pizza but which may still have too many carbs. A good California-style Mexican chain is the “… and Beer” joints: Papas and Beer, Mamas and Beer, Fajitas and Beer.

Black Mountain itself is very friendly. Just strolling around will be pleasant, and the opportunity to discover its charms will be agreeable in itself.

  4. You are certainly welcome. That section of the Parkway is not too far from me, and therefore from the Hall actual. If you’d care to drop by let me know.

  5. Needless to say, we cancelled our travel plans, and donated to relief.
