Helen Keller had been accused of plagiarism, and
Twain wrote to encourage her. He adds: "a grown person’s memory tablet is a palimpsest, with hardly a bare space upon which to engrave a phrase" which is certainly a good description of my memory sometimes. I remember the grocery list, but then I notice the road work and think about the detour and
I can't remember if we needed carrots.
Given Twain's endorsement, I will keep on writing, though others said the things better before--and will after.

Also a theme in Scaramouche, where the title character encourages more plagiarism as a means of improvement.
