I'm old enough to remember when dropping the deck was a horrible thing to contemplate, and punched cards are easier to deal with than little bits of lead type.

I used often to make a living by typing, before there were word processors. When word processors fist appeared, it still was uncommon for anyone but professional typists to use them, so we often were the first to master them. Those first ones weren't obvious at all; in college, we set the newspaper on a screen that would remember only one line at a time, and printed the column out on paper that still had to be pasted down on a page. Later, of course, word processors got easier, and everyone got used to typing and layout out for himself.
