I'd heard of pollywogs and shellbacks. Apparently there are more traditions than the crossing the equator one:
"blue nose", "red nose", and "Sea Squatter", among others. The opening paragraph about "rum, sodomy, and the lash" probably couldn't be penned today: it talks about vices.
