Trench warfare

I had not heard about these lessons from the Russo-Japanese War before. The obvious lesson was wrong.

Interesting read. I'd heard a little about the Russo-Japanese war but some of the anti-Asian bias even seeped into later histories (i.e. the Japanese won because the Russian forces were far away from their center of mass). It's also interesting to project forward through this from the American Civil War experience which would have shown something very similar in Grant's final campaign. I'm wondering if Stonewall's, Sherman's and even Grant's (at Vicksburg) use of maneuver got lost in the emphasis on emerging technology.
