Outdoor services

A knot of about 80 people were on the west corner of the capitol square singing songs about recalling governor Scott Walker. The second one I heard was based on "Down by the riverside" and the first was also based on an old spiritual.

At first I thought it was a bit odd, but on reflection realized that they were still religious songs, rewritten for a different religion. No doubt there was a sermon too.

Folksingers have been good at that. Think Pete Seeger, who could change the focus to liberal causes with only a little change in the lyrics or delivery.

It's the same thing that cults do with traditional Christian language: hollow out the fruit and put the peel back over something else.

Your tribes sometimes have religious aspects to them. What they organize their lives around takes the role of a god.

Rhythm and singing are powerful tools for all kinds of social cohesion.
