I've heard of an abstract puzzle that included extra peices, of ones that didn't include edge peices--were there double-sided jigsaw puzzles with pictures on both sides? Yes.
I don't start jigsaw puzzles myself, but if one is already out it tends to exert a diabolical fascination...

They no longer attract, for some reason. You can do them by shape or by colors. The ones that are solid eliminate the color clues, the ones with extra pieces are set up to confuse those working by shape. I can see how both these things make the task more difficult, but I do not find them more interesting. I am clearly not the target audience.
