Are the proposed bans on dyes based on solid risk analysis that was just held up for some reason? If so, what caused the delay?
Or are they subject to discretion--in which case, why does one man have that kind of discretion? It seems a bit arbitrary.

Equally applicable is what's the downside of not using them? As noted in several places when this was first suggested lots of other countries make do just fine without using these particular substances in food.
I don't doubt that there are no particular downsides. I just wonder how the decisions get made -- how arbitrary are they?
